Mpumalanga urges cross border collaboration to curb malaria outbreak

Four malaria deaths and 858 cases have been reported in Mpumalanga since the beginning of the year.

Health MEC Sasekani Manzini says Nkomazi, east of Malelane, is one of the malaria-affected zones in the province.

The area experienced devastating floods in January and now, recent floods have created favourable conditions for mosquito breeding.

The province commemorated World Malaria Day in KwaMhlushwa in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, with a focus on accelerating elimination efforts.

Gauteng has recorded 141 confirmed cases and 11 deaths.

Manzini has called for cross border collaboration to curb the transmission of the disease.

“We have programmes – you see now we are here in Nkomazi because we are bordering with Mozambique and Eswatini, that’s how we know our cases come from outside the country. And we have recorded four deaths – these deaths are from people with a history of travelling outside the country, hence it’s important that we work together with the neighbouring countries.”
