Xolani Khumalo is the ActionSA mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni.
ActionSA National Chairperson, Michael Beaumont, says the party is fully behind its Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Xolani Khumalo, as he is set to hand himself over to the police at Katlehong, east of Johannesburg on Monday morning.
This follows allegations of being involved in an assault case.
The party says the incident stems from information leaked from within the SA Police Service, indicating an intention to arrest Khumalo in connection with a case involving an alleged drug dealer.
ActionSA claims that the same suspect laid a false charge of assault against Khumalo.
Beaumont says what’s unfolding in Ekurhuleni exposes police corruption.
“The party will be there in force with him as a statement of solidarity. Because again, this is something that South Africans are just so familiar with. The police are not doing their jobs in getting criminals off our streets. They are heavily implicated in the trade of drugs. And when someone actually challenges those who trade their drugs, the police harass them and arrest them. We’ve investigated this issue thoroughly, and we do believe that these are false claims that have been made against him. But also, let’s be clear, ActionSA is not going to suspend hard-working community activists who are serving their communities on the words of drug dealers,” says Beaumont.
