Only teachers to report to schools in Limpopo to assess flood impact

Limpopo’s Education Department says only teachers will report for duty on Monday to assess the impact of the floods.

Learners are expected to go to classes on Tuesday after the assessment.

The schools in the flood-stricken areas in some parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga didn’t open when the inland schools opened for the new academic year due to floods.

Department spokesperson Mike Maringa says members of the SGB should join the teachers in making assessments.

Meanwhile, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has welcomed the classification of the floods as a national disaster.

Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and the North West provinces have been declared as disaster areas.

Premier Spokesperson Thilivhali Muavha says the classification will help ensure that the communities get the much-needed relief and repair the infrastructure.

“Premier DR Phophi Ramathuba says this classification has come at the right time when the extent of the damage to the infrastructure is becoming visible to all, with access to some areas slowly opening. And the premier has said once again that the province needs all this assistance so that the province can start to rebuild Limpopo after these devastating floods, because this help will be able to be augmented in many ways,” says Muavha.
