Blitzboks through to CTN leg of World Rugby’s Sevens series semis

The Blitzboks are through to the semi-finals of the Cape Town leg of World Rugby’s Sevens series. The South Africans have so far today beaten Fiji 24-21, and then stunned Dubai champions, 19-14.

The defending champions will now face Great Britain in their final pool match later tonight.

Great Britain have lost both their matches against Fiji and the Kiwi’s earlier today.

In arguably their toughest match of the day, New Zealand were first on the board after two minutes of play with captain Impi Visser yellow-carded for a high tackle.

Both sides then squandered scoring opportunities in the first half. And the All Black Sevens enjoyed a 7-nil lead at the break.

The South Africans, however, completely dominated the second half. After less than a minute of play, Donovan Don went over to put the home side back in the picture.

Two minutes later, the Blitzboks were at it again. This time, Shilton van Wyk scored to put his side in front for the first time.

And with just under a minute to go, Ronald Brown, sealed the deal for the hosts. Although the Kiwi’s scored one more try, the South Africans had already done enough to secure an impressive 19-14 win.

Zain Davids says, “Obviously the crowd gives us energy and the guys said we must set our foundation. We came out and set our foundation but we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. But we want it, like all the teams want it. But I have to give the boys credit for coming out and showing up.”

The Blitzboks also had a slow start against Fiji.

But Christi Grobbelaar drew matters level after two minutes. And Van Wyk then scored a hat-trick of tries, to secure a nail-biting 24-21 win for the South Africans.
