Advocate Charles Mnisi who represents accused one in the Senzo Meyiwa trial.
The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the High Court in Pretoria is expected to resume this morning after proceedings abruptly ended to allow defence counsel Charles Mnisi to consult with a medical practitioner.
Five men are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain. The court was expected to hear arguments on the admissibility of Sifiso Gwabini Zungu’s statement – however proceedings were interrupted over security concerns.
Advocate Mnisi says he was not in the right state of mind after allegations that the defence could also be investigated for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy to eliminate key role players in the investigation.
Mnisi: I am mentally not fit subsequent to those allegations that made against me. So if the court is forcing me to proceed.
Judge: What do you mean I’m forcing you? No.
Mnisi: My Lord, I am being expected to proceed with this trial despite to this allegations that have been raised against me. As I’ve told the court, I’m mentally affected.
Judge: If you want to consult a psychologist, a doctor, fine, but you can’t say open handedly that you can’t continue with the case.
Mnisi: Thank you, I think I would have to go and consult.
