Mkhwanazi to continue facing tough questions at Madlanga Commission

Suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi will continue with his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria this morning.

His testimony will be followed by that of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Mchunu who began his testimony on Tuesday is expected to also face cross-examination from evidence leaders on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

The PKTT was disbanded on the 31st of December 2024.

This is a move that various witnesses have testified was unlawful.

Mchunu’s testimony has centred around the work study that was conducted in 2019.

He testified that if the study was implemented, the PKTT would be collapsed under the murder and robbery unit.

He told the commission that if national police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola had signed off on the study earlier, then the PKTT would’ve been dissolved.

Mchunu’s testimony lays the basis that the disbandment of the PKTT was not immediate but has been a long time coming.

This follows the communication he sent out on New Year’s Eve last year where he ordered that the PKTT be dissolved with immediate effect.

Proceedings start at 8:30 am.
