Mashazi reprimanded by Baloyi at Madlanga Commission

Commissioner Sesi Baloyi SC has reprimanded retired Ekurhuleni City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi for her conduct at the Madlanga Commission.

Dr Mashazi, who began her testimony on Monday, has been accused of protecting suspended deputy police Chief of Ekurhuleni Metro Department (EMPD), Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi.

She has also been criticised for conduct at the Commission in regard to her responses and demeanor.

Dr Mashazi refused to comment on her actions when probed by Commissioner Baloyi.

Baloyi SC: You sit and you say I don’t recall, it suggests to me that you may not be taking the process as seriously as we are taking it. You can comment if you want to, but I am happy if you choose not to say anything.

Mashazi: No comment.

The Commission has also sought to allay fears of prejudice on Mashazi, after her legal representatives raised a concern on “prejudice” that she is receiving from social media.

This follows unfavorable social media reactions on Mashazi since her appearance at the Commission on Monday.

Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has told Mashazi that, what is important is what comes out of the Commission and not what members of the public perceive.

“What you are referring to as the perceptions that people out there may have that doesn’t go to the content of the evidence before us nor does it go to how we will in the end assess that evidence so in that regard she will not suffer any prejudice. That’s all we as commissioners are interested in. People will have views of whoever. Even if you came here 100% prepared with all the documents you need they would still have views about you Dr Mashazi unfortunately we cannot do anything about that.”
