Police Minister Senzo Mchunu at Parliament’s Ad hoc Committee.
Analyst Levy Ndou says South Africans deserve nothing but the truth from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu when he testifies before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon.
Several witnesses have testified at the Commission that Mchunu did not consult stakeholders when he disbanded the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has alleged that the task team was disbanded to protect criminal cartels and some high-profile suspects.
But Mchunu, who is on a leave of absence, has denied the allegations.
Ndou says, “The Minister should be able to take South Africans into his confidence. Firstly, on the powers that he has as a Minister and the suspicious relation that he could have had with certain individuals that are questionable.”
He adds: “But also very importantly is that the Minister should be able to take all of [us] into confidence on matters that relate to his role in the activities of the police and areas where he was able to clarify … here it’s about the truth, it’s about what has happened and what has not happened and the commission will make a final determination. I expect Mchunu to come and talk more about the PKTT and try to justify the main reasons why he took the decision for that to be disbanded.”
