Police Minister Senzo Mchunu at the Madlanga Commission
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has testified that the budget for the National Political Killings Task Team (NPKTT) beyond 2022 was irregular under the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
Mchunu testified that there was no extension of the PKTT beyond that year as per the regulations.
He is in the hot seat defending his decision to disband the PKTT in December 2024.
“What I am explaining here is that the NPKTT was a project it had a project leader it was not a unit in SAPS and it had no budget allocated but budgeted to be found from other programs even during extensions to fund it. It had a clear objective and it had to be subjected to regular assessments and costs had to be calculated.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on a leave of absence in July.
This followed allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner of Police Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that syndicates have infiltrated the country’s criminal justice system.
Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of being in constant communication with an associate who is linked to a criminal syndicate.
