Mchunu expected to face tough cross-examination at Madlanga Commission

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to face tough cross-examination from evidence leaders when he appears before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon.

Mchunu was placed on a leave of absence in July this year.

This followed KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegation that Mchunu unlawfully disbanded the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Critics allege that the aim of the disbandment was to obstruct investigations into powerful individuals.

Mchunu has denied this, saying he had briefed President Ramaphosa on his intention to disband the task team and he had supported the move.

Mchunu has already presented himself before the Ad Hoc Committee in Parliament.

Various witnesses have testified that he had no authority to disband the Political Killings Task Team.

The witnesses have further testified that the authority to dissolve the PKTT was the function of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

Before Mchunu testifies at 2 pm, retired Ekurhuleni City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi is expected to conclude her testimony.
