Residents of Wentworth, South of Durban protesting.
Residents of Wentworth, South of Durban, took to the streets to protest against rising gang violence in the area.
Community members say ongoing shootings have made daily life unsafe.
Some parents carried empty coffins to symbolise their children lost to the violence, calling on government to step in and protect their neighbourhood.
Resident Darian Smith says the community is willing to work together with government to combat crime in the area.
“If we can spend billions and millions on parties and inaugurations and all of this, can you not just send five police vans here? Can you not send more police officers especially with the rates of violence that exist within this community? Not just shootings, but rape, domestic violence, and gender-based violence. There’s a range of things going on, and it’s about time that government come to the party.”
