Manhunt underway after two police officers killed in Ivory Park

Police are continuing to search for two suspects who fatally shot two on-duty police officers on Friday evening in Ivory Park, in Ekurhuleni.

The officers were conducting crime prevention duties at Ivory Park Extension 9 when they were fatally shot. The suspects fled the scene with two SAPS pistols, a rifle and two cellphones.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the killing of police officers is concerning.

“Our main concern as management is the ongoing attacks and killing of our police officers. When you look at the period starting in April up until September, we’ve got more than about six police officers who were killed in the line of duty. Off duty, we have about 35. So that’s quite a large number. And that is why we also have the police safety strategy plan that is in place that looks at keeping our police officers safe on and off duty, ensuring that they attend the adequate refresher course training and that they have the correct equipment to respond to the call of duty, and just to ensure that they’re always operationally ready to go out there and fight crime and protect communities.”
