ANCYL commends Gigaba for stepping aside after being charged

The African National Congress (ANC) Youth League has expressed its support for ANC Member of Parliament Malusi Gigaba who has stepped aside from his duties after being charged with corruption relating to a multi-billion-rand Transnet tender for locomotives.

The former Public Enterprises Minister and his four co-accused appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday over alleged corruption linked to the Gupta family.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ANC welcomed the move saying that Gigaba’s decision reflects discipline, maturity and revolutionary consciousness expected of cadres.

ANCYL National Spokesperson, Zama Khanyase, has commended Gigaba for adhering to the party’s step-aside rule.

“The rule does say that when you are formally charged that is when you must officially step aside. The ANC has communicated the fact that Dr Malusi Gigaba did not need to be requested to step aside, but he voluntarily did so. We really commend it, not as an admission of guilt on his part, but just to say that in line with the decision of the ANC and him affording himself the opportunity to go clear his name. We welcome it and we support it and wish him all the best in this process.”
