Brown Mogotsi testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, 18 November 2025.
Crime expert Chad Thomas has described the testimony of North West businessman Brown Mogotsi as unreliable.
Mogotsi appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday and will continue with his testimony on Wednesday afternoon.
On Tuesday, he told the commission that he works as an undercover crime‑intelligence agent for the police’s Crime Intelligence division.
He also claimed to have received information that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and the AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini were actively working for the CIA.
Mogotsi, however, did not have any evidence to support his claims.
Thomas says Mogotsi’s claims give credence to conspiracy theories surrounding state security.
“It’s not very credible at all. It’s creating this narrative of foreign involvement in South Africa, trying to stir what we call a tele-revolution and it’s not the first time we’ve experienced people being called out for being spies. There’s never been any evidence that any of this exists and we see the same narrative carried out over and over again by different information peddlers, different agent provocateurs and it’s simply to create this distrust in our leadership. So that type of testimony, which is hearsay upon hearsay, double hearsay, is treated with the contempt that it deserves,” adds Thomas.
