The South African men’s cricket team faces its toughest challenge since being crowned ICC World Test Champions earlier this year.
The Proteas enter phase two of the defence of their title with a two-match series in India.
It’s part of a three-format tour, and the first test starts at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday morning.
The subcontinent conditions always favour spin bowlers. But they need to be complemented by good batting.
A tougher assignment awaits in India, and Captain Temba Bavuma sees it as an opportunity rather than a challenge.
“The ball does seem to swing right here in Kolkata, probably a little bit more. We will be accustomed to playing here in India, it’s obviously a consideration of playing an extra spinner. In the subcontinent, you wanna make sure that you have resources from the spin point of view. I don’t think too much changes from the batting. You wanna select you best six batters, yeah, it’s more on a bowling point of view.”
The Proteas want to make the most of their summer on the Indian sub-continent. The first ball of the India-South Africa Test series will be bowled at 06:00am on Friday, South African time.
