Inaccuracies in sworn statement halt Cedrick Nkabinde’s testimony

The Police Ministry’s Chief of Staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, has acknowledged that he needs to improve his sworn statement to be deposed before Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee.

This comes after the committee sent him packing on Thursday because of inaccuracies in his statement.

Nkabinde appeared before the committee, which is probing allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July.

He admitted in the committee that he had thumb sucked dates in his statement.

Several MPs have called his affidavit misleading and therefore unacceptable. Nkabinde assured MPs that he would be more accurate next time.

During his testimony, he stated that he was given the number of the controversial North West businessman, Brown Mogotsi, by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave.

Nkabinde also confirmed that he facilitated two meetings between Mogotsi and Mchunu.

Committee Chairperson Molapi Lekganyane says the decision was unanimous. He explains their decision.

“Honorable members, you have said it, we are in no position to continue with today’s hearing, given the quality of information here today.”
