The head of the NPA Advocate Shamila Batohi says any suggestion that the authority is a failing organisation, is not true.
She is appearing before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, established to look into allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system made by KZN Police Commissioner Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July.
Batohi was criticised for failures such as the unsuccessful extradition of the Guptas and the acquittal of televangelist Timothy Omotoso who was facing several charges of rape and human trafficking.
But she says the prosecuting authority’s successes far outweighs its failures.
“I just want to say the performance of the NPA has gone from 50% to 75% and in Q1 is at 81%. I agree there have been setbacks with AFU recovered almost 50% in the past 25 years has been recovered in the past four years.”
