ANC grants Mchunu’s wish to be relieved of duties

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s wish to be relieved of his National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) duties in the African National Congress (ANC), has been granted by his party.

This comes after the party earlier rejected his request to step aside from his organisational duties.

The party pointed out that the ANC’s step aside rule applies to members who are charged by a court of law.

Briefing the media after Monday’s National Working Committee meeting, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said this was an individual decision by Mchunu which the party respects.

Mchunu was also placed on a leave of absence as Police Minister by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July, following allegations of interference in police investigations.

“Now, in the light of the Commission’s work and what it requires on him, it is practically impossible not to agree to that particular request. That is what has guided the National Working Committee to then grant Comrade Senzo the request that he made that he wished to step aside to be on special leave equally in terms of the party work and the work of the National Executive Committee pending the processes that have been undertaken at the present moment, so that he has got no burden on himself or the ANC as we deal with these particular matters,” says Mbalula.
