Amajimbos team
The South African under-17 football team has started its FIFA World Cup campaign with a win. Amajimbos beat Bolivia 3-1 in Doha, Qatar, despite being reduced to 10 men early on.
South Africa qualified for the World Cup after reaching the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations in Morocco earlier this year.
Amajimbos showcased incredible form from the get-go as they put pressure on Bolivia’s defence. But right back, Sive Pama received his marching orders early on after a second yellow card.
Not even that could break Amajimbos’ spirit as Emile Witbooi of Cape Town City scored just two minutes after Pama was sent out.
They continued to play attacking football and despite peppering the Bolivian goal, could not increase their lead by half time.
The second half was no different and Neo Bohloko doubled South Africa’s lead soon after the restart. Bohloko is on Kaizer Chiefs’ books and has been a hit in the Diski Challenge for quite some time.
Bolivia had their chances, but Lwandiso Radebe was rock solid in goal, until the 70th minute when they were awarded a penalty.
But South Africa wasn’t done and completed a comfortable 3-1 victory in stoppage time to sit on top of the Group A table with three points.
Next up for Amajimbos are hosts Qatar on Thursday.
