Proteas celebrate Heritage Day with fans and a braai

Fans are flocking to meet the Proteas at Durban’s Kingsmead stadium where the South African team is hosting a braai day to celebrate Heritage Day and their victory in the World Test Championship. The 5-wicket victory over Australia at Lord’s in June secured the Proteas their first ICC title since 1998.

Due to the rainy weather a marquee tent has been erected at the stadium for the festivities. Members of the national team are handing out autographs and signing bats for children and adults alike.

Fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada says such a celebration on Heritage Day is important to foster unity in the country.

“To me, what it means in a South African context is you look at us having 11 different official languages and just celebrating our diversity as a country – that’s what makes us so stron. If you also look at sport and how it has played a role in South Africa; it’s what unites people. It’s pretty cool that we’re having something like this on Heritage Day. I think it basically solidifies its significance of what heritage means in South Africa,” says Rabada.

With South Africans celebrating Heritage Day with a braai, Radaba elaborates on his favourites and what a braai at home entails.

“That’s a tough one. I would probably say a rump steak and wors. I think that’s my favourite. Usually on a Braai Day, you normally have all the types of meat – the chops, the steak, the chicken and the wors.”
