The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed receiving communication from FIFA, which states that world football’s governing body is investigating the Teboho Mokoena saga.
The Bafana Bafana midfielder was fielded in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March despite having collected two yellow cards.
28-year-old Mokoena was ineligible to play in the match, which Bafana won 2-nil in Polokwane.
If found guilty, South Africa could be docked three points.
SAFA chief executive Lydia Monyepao says they will communicate with FIFA this week.
“We received confirmation from FIFA that they are investigating the matter, which is something that we’ve been waiting for, for a very long time and now it’s on the table. We are preparing our defence for that and we need to be reverting to FIFA in the next couple of days, so all our attention is on that. We’ve got attorneys that have already been appointed to help us as well”.
Monyepao says the team’s objective is to win the two remaining matches, regardless of the outcome of the FIFA investigation.
“The focus when I spoke to coach Hugo Broos is about ensuring that we get maximum points come October, anything else is noise to us.”
