Van Niekerk advances to 200m semifinals at WAC

South Africa’s 400 metres world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, has advanced to the men’s 200 metres semifinals at the World Athletics Championships (WAC) in Tokyo.

The 33-year-old, who sustained a career-threatening knee injury in 2017, finished second in his heat in a time on 20.19 seconds.

It was slightly slower than his season’s best of 20.17 seconds, but he came in as 11th fastest of all the qualifiers.

His compatriot, Sinesipho Dambile, is also through to the semifinals.

In the semifinals of the women’s 400 metres hurdles, South Africa’s Zeney van der Walt, only managed to finish in seventh place.

Her time of 55.06 seconds was way off the fastest qualifying time of 52.31 seconds ran by Femke Bol of the Netherlands.
