Elroy Gelant finishes 33rd in the marathon at the World Championships, Tokyo
Team South Africa has had mixed results in the morning session on day 3 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Zeney van der Walt reached the semifinals of the women’s 400m hurdles. She finished 4th in her heat in 55.32 seconds to sneak into the next round. She’ll be back on the track for the next round on Wednesday.
Elroy Gelant finished 33rd out of 90 runners in the men’s marathon, completing the course in two hours, 16 minutes and 32 seconds; 6 minutes slower than the time he had hoped for.
Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania won gold in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 48 seconds. Only 66 runners completed the race in hot and humid conditions.
