Fortuin, who was born in George in the Southern Cape, started his provincial career playing for the SWD Eagles in 1998, before moving to the Free State Cheetahs in 2005.

He played in Bloemfontein for four years.

He suffered a suspected heart attack before a training session of the Northam Rhinos, a club in Limpopo.
