SA down syndrome swimmer bags six world records in Thailand


South African swimming sensation from George in the Western Cape, Minke Janse van Rensburg, is now officially the best down syndrome swimmer in the world.

She made history at the 2025 Virtus Swimming World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, shattering six individual world records and another with her relay team.

Named “Swimmer of the Tournament”, she managed to win 11 medals, the most by any participant. This included six gold, two silver and three bronze.

The 20-year-old says she is extremely happy with her wins.

“I have now broken the 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre freestyle, 200-metre freestyle, the 400-metre individual medley, 200-metre and 50-metre butterfly, as well as the relay world records. I enjoyed it a lot, there were a lot of people. I’m happy to be the top-down syndrome swimmer in the world.”

Down Syndrome swimming star achieves another title
