Banyana Banyana players celebrate after their win against Senegal.
Banyana Banyana players have put behind them the disappointment of losing to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the semi-final of the WAFCON tournament in Morocco and are now focused on Friday’s bronze medal match against Ghana.
The players are now motivated to beat Ghana’s Black Queens in Casablanca to win the bronze medal and not return home empty-handed.
They’ve also vowed to do it for midfielder Gabriela Salgado, who suffered a horrific injury in their 2-1 loss to Nigeria on Tuesday.
Banyana Banyana’s goal when they departed for the WAFCON tournament in Morocco was to defend their title. However, the team will not achieve that after losing 2-1 to Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Tuesday. But it’s not all gloom and doom, as there is still the bronze medal to fight for.
Banyana defender, Bongeka Gamede, says the players are now focused on their bronze medal match against Ghana’s Black Queens, whom they beat 2-nil in the group stages.
“The motivation now is to go for the medal since we are not in the final. I think we need to focus on that. There is still a positive thing out of this. I think the players will be motivated for that. We are playing Ghana; we played them before. We just have to play our normal football,” says Gamede.
And the Banyana Banyana players have also vowed to do it for their injured teammate, Gabriela Salgado.
“We have to be strong for her. I know it is not easy. One can’t just let it go like that. You see, I am unhappy, but we cannot be like that forever. We just have to lift our heads up and move on,” says Regina Mogolola, Banyana midfielder.
The South Africans will fancy their chances against Ghana’s Black Queens on Friday evening. Banyana Banyana have beaten Ghana twice in their last three matches, with the West Africans winning one of those encounters.
