Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named Stellenbosch defender, Fawaaz Basadien as captain of the national team in the two friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique.

Bafana will face Tanzania on Friday evening before welcoming Mozambique on Tuesday.

Both encounters will be played at the new Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

Bafana’s longest serving coach, Broos explains his decision to pick Basadien.

“First of all, I have to say that Fawaaz will be our captain, so he is our captain. As I said, I want to give play time to everybody, so you have to look a little bit who I will put in the team. You can’t put all the youngsters in one team. Fawaaz is one of the oldest players. I think the choice was made very quickly.”

Meanwhile, 28-year-old Basadien says he feels honoured to be given the captain’s armband.

“I did not expect it to come so soon but at the same time I’m honoured and privileged to be captain of the national team. I mean obviously it is something you dream about growing up as a footballer. I’m ready, I’m prepared, helping those young in the team. When I came first time to the team, there were guys who were helping me so I’m willing to that with the young players.”
