The eThekwini Municipality says preparations for the 98th Comrades Marathon are in full swing.

The biggest sporting event on the South African calendar is scheduled for Sunday.

This year it will be a down-run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

The Municipality’s spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says they have activated a comprehensive operational plan to ensure a spotless and welcoming environment for the ultra-marathon.

Sisilana says, “The plan is part of a broader city beautification and readiness programme coordinated across multiple departments to ensure that Durban is on top form for runners.”

“Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit will be cleaning the eThekwini boundary from Cato Ridge to the Moses Mabhida Stadium People’s Park, ensuring that all waste is collected and the route remains litter-free after the race.”

She adds: “In addition, waste receptacles will be strategically placed along the route to encourage responsible disposal from the spectators.”
