Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla to appear in court for the civil unrest case

The daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, is due to make her second appearance in the Durban High Court on Thursday. The charges against her relate to inciting terrorism and public violence during the 2021 civil unrest.

Zuma-Sambudla is the 69th person to be charged in connection with the widespread unrest which included looting in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

She had handed herself over to the police at the end of January this year.

The Durban Magistrate’s Court had released her on warning and transferred the case to the High Court.

The unrest and looting in July 2021 claimed more than 350 lives and cost the economy R50 billion. The state alleges that she used her then Twitter account with 100 000 followers to incite and support violence.

It’s alleged that she did so to pressure authorities into releasing her father. The unrest broke out after former President Jacob Zuma started a 15-month prison term for contempt of the Constitutional Court. This after he failed to appear before the Zondo Commission into State Capture.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla became an MK Party member of parliament after last year’s general elections.
