EFF claims Free State has 11 000 incomplete RDP houses

The EFF in the Free State says there are about 11 000 incomplete RDP houses in the province.

The party’s Provincial Secretary Busanku Msimanga says the provincial government should hold contractors accountable and stop redirecting money that is meant to build new houses, to long-overdue incomplete houses.

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane conducted an oversight visit to the Mangaung Metro to resolve service delivery blockages.

Free State is among the three struggling provinces that the minister has identified.

Msimanga adds that the government should review the advanced payment system to contractors.

“The problem lays with the government as a whole, both the executive authority and accounting authority of the government. Government is the one that releases money in a form of advanced payments as a result of releasing advanced payments people were in the position to take that money and used it as their personal money because it was at their disposal without necessarily building houses. So, we are in that position. Whatever mess we find ourselves in is because of the ANC-led government, not a particular official in government.”
