Girls’ netball league in Gqeberha poses on court with Ministry of Education and school officials
A Gqeberha-based NGO has handed over state-of-the-art sports facilities worth R300 000 to Loyiso High School in Zwide township, Eastern Cape.
The facilities for Netball and a tennis court will be used after school for learners to train as well as to fight social ills.
The project aimed to promote sports at schools and spread it across schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Region.
During the handover, learners were given soccer balls, netball kits, tennis rackets, and balls.
Sport Revolution Director Bantwini Matika says they want learners to participate in sport and extramural activities,
“Sport revolution is a catalyst to make sure that township and village schools are active in school sport. We are targeting dilapidated school grounds, and our biggest partner is the Department of Education. We signed a memorandum of understanding with them to ensure that kids get quality sporting facilities.”
The Provincial Department of Education says the initiative will assist with learning and teaching by creating an environment for healthy minds.
The Department’s Director, Pam Gxuluwe says, “My role is to make sure that I strengthen relations with partners and also they make sure they participate in sport. It’s our obligation as the department to encourage them and forge government/private relations for the sake of our learners, they also participate in sport.”
