Suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Daphney Manamela has accused National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola of protecting corrupt police officers.
Addressing a media briefing in Mbombela, she alleges that she was suspended while, among other things, she was taking action against police officers who are involved in extortion and corruption.
She further says that she called for Masemola’s intervention regarding some of the challenges she was facing without success.
Manamela says that a provincial task team investigating serious cases was disbanded after she was suspended.
She also says there was interference in political cases, illegal mining, and kidnappings.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the General’s allegations are very serious and can not be taken lightly or ignored.
She says the accusations must be subjected to the necessary investigative processes.
