Suspects allegedly robbed homes before killing patrollers in Inanda

Three suspected robbers who shot and killed three community patrollers at the Bhambayi area in Inanda north of Durban, had allegedly robbed several homes in the area before the shooting incident. That’s according to one of the leaders of community patrollers Thembelihle Mdiya.

One patroller was killed at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their wounds in hospital. One of the suspected robbers was killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Mdiya says community patrollers took to the streets after receiving reports from residents who had allegedly been robbed, in an attempt to track down the suspects.

“We came together and rushed to the Cencele area. When we got there, several households reported to us that three boys came in pointed firearms at them and took their cell phones. In another house they took laptops. We went out as patrollers, and we did our job to try and see if we can’t track and see the suspects. We worked through the night, and after midnight, around half past twelve we came across three boys at the Number Five area. When we asked them what they were doing at night, they didn’t say anything, they just opened fire at us.”
