Petrol heads flock for Knysna for Simola Hillclimb

Car enthusiasts have flocked to Knysna in the Western Cape where the 16th edition of the Simola Hillclimb is taking place this weekend.

The high-speed race in which classic and modern cars compete, sees drivers being put to their paces as they race up a steep, almost 2 kilometre incline, to be named King of the Hill.

Sunday will be the final day of the event where the winner will be announced.

Sports journalist Jeff Ayliffe was one of the spectators.

“Today was the first chance for spectators to see the big guns in action and the road cars, the super cars, the modified saloons as well as the single seaters and they were very impressive with times dipping in under the 36 second mark. The current record is off course 34.1 seconds. Tomorrow is the big day. It is the King of the Hill shootout getting under way just after 9am on Sunday morning.”
