Meyer’s appointment as US ambassador deeply troubling: ATM

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) says the appointment of Roelf Meyer as ambassador to the US is deeply troubling.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Meyer’s appointment late on Wednesday night.

ATM Parliamentary leader Vuyo Zungula says that deploying an apartheid era minister as ambassador shows the African National Congress (ANC) cannot be trusted to lead South Africa to full liberation.

He added that the party strongly rejects the appointment of the veteran politician.

Zungula says, “We view this as political regression that shows a government that is willing to appease a government that is led by Donald Trump, a government that went on a misinformation drive against our country about the so-called genocide, which does not exist, and this comes at the expense of our sovereignty and liberation legacies as a country.”

ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY

Rise Mzansi says Meyer must focus on economic diplomacy.

The party says his appointment comes at a time when South African workers and businesses face huge challenges.

With over 25 000 South Africans being employed by 600 American companies operating in the country, Rise Mzansi Spokesperson Mabine Seabe says Meyer will have to skillfully manage relations to ensure business opportunities thrive.

Seabe says, “Recent diplomatic efforts aim to double this presence to 1000 companies, which could potentially create another 250 000 jobs in sectors such as technology, finance, and manufacturing.”

“To achieve this, Meyer must skilfully navigate complex tensions, including US–South Africa trade debates and shifting global alliances, to ensure that South Africa remains a sought-after global partner while consistently upholding the moral example of our Constitution.”

He adds, “While Meyer possesses significant experience, his performance will be measured against the standard of professionalism and the tangible advancement of the South African economy.”
