Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit member Colonel Gavin Jacob testifying before the Madlanga Commission
Chairperson of the Madlanga Commission, retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, has challenged the Durban Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit Colonel, Gavin Jacob, over his decision to book a large consignment of drugs at an ill-equipped Isipingo Police Station instead of nearby police stations.
Madlanga has put it to Jacob that he made assumptions about the capacity of the surrounding police stations to store the 541-kilogramme cocaine consignment that was intercepted.
Evidence before the Commission revealed that the Maiden Wharf police station, located approximately 16 kilometres from the Isipingo depot, was one of the facilities that could have been used to store the R200-million drug consignment.
Jacob conceded to Justice Madlanga that he had assumed there was no available storage space at Maiden Wharf police station and surrounding police stations.
