Madlanga Commission continues to hear drug-related testimony

A South African Police Service ( SAPS) Warrant Officer attached to the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal will continue to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

Karl Sander started his testimony on Monday.

He focused on the mysterious disappearance of drugs from the Isipingo police station, south of Durban, in November 2021.

It later emerged that the over R200 million worth of drugs had been taken to a Hawks storage facility in Port Shepstone.

Evidence before the Madlanga Commission has revealed that the Hawks facility did not have sufficient security detail to house the consignment.

The storage facility was picked by KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Head Major General Lesetja Senona, who is currently suspended.

His choice of a storage facility has raised questions about his alleged involvement in the missing consignment.

On Monday, Sander testified that his success in the recovery of illicit drugs was “stepping on toes [drug cartels]”.

When pressed on what this statement meant, Sander’s evidence implied that his work served as a threat to alleged corrupt networks.
