Hill-Lewis announces R10bn boost for MyCiTi, including new routes

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced a R10 billion investment to expand the MyCiTi bus service. He visited construction sites in Claremont and Duinefontein, where new routes worth R7 billion are underway.

The major routes affected include Imam Haron Road, Stanhope Road, and First Avenue, leading towards the M5. Once complete, the new routes will link commuters from Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Claremont, and Wynberg.

Hill-Lewis says they are trying to mitigate the burden of travel expenses for commuters.

“There are lots of residents of Cape Town who spend 30% or more of their income on public transport because minibus taxis are quite expensive and you have to connect lots of times. This is a much more direct service, and it’s cheaper.”

In a media statement, MyCiti bus says the second phase of the expansion project, which commences on Wednesday, will be the most stringent.

Iman Haron Road will be closed for a period of six months in the direction between Cook and Markham Roads. Motorists can take a detour via Markham Road.

City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, says, “The project team is trying their best to limit the impact on road users. Work on the roads itself will only happen outside of the peak periods, and the contractor will ensure that traffic is accommodated in both directions at all times. I encourage residents to anticipate delays as roadworks are always disruptive. Best is to plan ahead and to consider alternative routes to destinations as far as possible.”

Temporary signage and flag personnel will be deployed to help keep traffic flowing and ensure the safety of all road users.

The projected date for completion is June 2027.
