Wreaths laid outside the only door for patrons at Enyobeni tavern
Closing arguments are expected on Monday in the inquest into the deaths of the 21 young people in the Enyobeni tavern tragedy in the KuGompo City Regional Court sitting in Mdantsane, in the Eastern Cape.
The tragedy happened in June 2022. The young people aged 13 to 21 died at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, in KuGombo City, where they had gathered for a “pens down” party to celebrate the end of mid-year school exams.
Legal representatives of Enyobeni tavern owners, Vuyokazi and Siyakhangela Ndevu, former Enyobeni bouncer, Thembisa Diko, and the families of the victims will make their closing remarks. The inquest aims to establish who should be held liable for the deaths.
The Enyobeni Tavern inquest resumes today in the East London Regional Court sitting in Mdantsane.

The inquest has been marred with delays due to technical challenges in the courtroom and the absence of persons of interest.
The closing arguments were set to be delivered in February this year, but due to the change of legal representation for Diko, the delivery of the closing arguments was postponed for the new legal representative to prepare.
