Councillors call for tangible results from Ditsobotla recovery plan

Councillors in the Lichtenburg based Ditsobotla Local Municipality in the North West have urged national government to ensure that plans for the municipality result in tangible developments.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana officially handed over the revised financial recovery plan to the council on Friday.

National government took over the running of Ditsobotla in September last year, following years of provincial interventions, which did not bare fruit.

Councillors say Godongwana’s plans will be useless if they do not translate into positive results.

Meanwhile, Godongwana says his department is helping the municipality in putting plans in place but will not bail it out.

“I’ve got hundreds of municipalities like this, where will I get the bailout? I must force them to change and run the municipality efficiently. If I do this (bail them out), everybody will misbehave and think that they’ll get a cheque for misbehaviour.”
