SANDF commemoration of fallen soldiers
Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga says United Nations Peacekeepers Day serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices of South African soldiers deployed in conflict zones across the continent.
She was speaking at commemorations honouring fallen peacekeepers and their families at Debrug, in Bloemfontein.
She says the day also highlights the emotional burden carried by the loved ones of soldiers who lost their lives.
The minister confirmed that the SANDF is continuing with a phased withdrawal from the Democratic Republic of Congo while working with authorities in the DRC to ensure a smooth transition and maintain stability efforts.
Motshekga says government remains committed to strengthening the country’s defense capabilities despite budgetary constraints.
“You have to fight to keep this peace. If you have to protect people, there must be soldiers, there must be sacrifices. And I think for me today, it’s very significant for everybody, especially those who are not soldiers, to reflect and respect and appreciate the life of a soldier. But also, to thank their families for the sacrifices which they make. Some of them leave children behind. I know of another one who only saw his child through photos. He never had an opportunity to carry the child. So, for me, it’s a day to reflect on that,”
