DA delegates walk into Hall 5 for the second day of the DA Federal Congress taking place at the Ghallager Convention Centre in Midrand.
Western Cape Provincial Legislature Deputy Speaker, Reagen Allen, says society has to work together to deal with gang violence affecting some areas in the country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed 2 200 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members to work with the South African Police Service to combat gang violence in affected areas last month.
Most of the community members in the areas applauded the government for the decision. Speaking on the sidelines of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Congress happening at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Allen says there needs to be cooperation between government and communities in dealing with the issue.
“Firstly, it needs to be tackled from a whole of society approach, a whole of government approach, every department working together but also, we need a policy change in that regard. We need to involve policing powers to a capable provincial government and metro where it can be implemented. If we look at investigations, which is a simple one, SAPS currently has x number of detectives that are sitting with over 500 dockets per detective. If that particular function can be outsourced to metro police as well, we will be able to see criminals behind bars where they belong.”
Some of the issues that the Congress focused on include unemployment and corruption.
