Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has assured members of Parliament that he has had no discussion with President Cyril Ramaphosa about the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid)’s Phala Phala report.
Cachalia was speaking at the Police Portfolio Committee meeting on Wednesday, where both Ipid and the South African Police Service (SAPS) briefed the committee on the directorate’s Phala Phala farm report.
Ipid probed any possible wrongdoing by SAPS officers who investigated the theft of US dollars from Ramaphosa’s farm in 2020.
Ipid found, among other things, that the head of the Presidential Protection Unit, Major General Wally Rhoode, and Constable Hlulani Rekhoto did not follow procedure.
Cachalia says he had no communication with the President on this matter.
“I’ve never had communication with the President on this matter. It’s important to say this because there has been a lot of suspicion of political interference both with the classification and declassification and the making public,” explains Cachalia.
