Mamaila residents outraged over rising rapes, robberies in Giyani

Residents of Mamaila, outside Giyani in Limpopo, have expressed frustration at a spate of rapes and robberies in their village.

On Saturday, four students at the local college Tlharihani TVET were raped and robbed at their on-campus accommodation. The community says nine women have been raped in the area since January this year.

The residents want the police to expedite investigations. “We are having a problem with Bolebodu station when we report the case we report and we never get a case number unless you do a follow-up yourself,” laments a community member.

Another adds, “People are being raped here, the elders are being raped, they rob us at gunpoint and when we report it they will never open a case and they will never tell you what is happening.”

“As the community leader of Mamaila, we have been informed about the incidents and we are working closely with the police officer to ensure that this person who raped our students is arrested as soon as possible,” says a resident.

“We are tired of people who are robbing us of our phones and money. When it is six o’clock we do not walk in the streets, we must stay at home because they will rob us. Our elders are being raped and young people, and when you go to report the case the following day you will see the person walking around the street,” emphasises another one.
