The bodies of two 12-year-old boys who drowned in a dam in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on Sunday have been found.

The Lusikisiki SAPS K9 Search and Rescue Unit search party found the boys after looking for them since they went missing.

The boys from Matyeba village were among a group of children who went swimming at the dam when they disappeared underwater.

Police provincial spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo says both boys are from the Mlatha family.

Matyolo says the two police divers who recovered the bodies have been commended for their work.

“Sergeant Makhosonke and Sergeant Nduva retrieved the bodies on Monday afternoon at about 15h00. The boys were swimming in the dam with other local boys but unfortunately, they drowned. OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Modishana, sent his heartfelt condolences to the family for their loss, and has also commended good work done by the two sergeants,” says Matyolo.
