The North West University (NWU) has unveiled student residences in honour of Siya Kolisi and Dr Rassie Erasmus on its Potchefstroom campus, amidst a student accommodation crisis at South African universities.

The Siya Kolisi residence accommodates 102 students affiliated to the NWU Rugby Institute whilst the Invictus residence houses 104 students.

These residences will house high-performance sports students attending the university.

Kolisi has encouraged young aspiring rugby players to work hard in order to be successful in life. He urges young people to continue working towards their dreams and goals.

“If you can take anything from the journey, you have to believe in yourself before anyone else because people normally believe in you once you start achieving something. You have to believe in yourself and you have to protect your dreams and if one thing when you are talented you must just work and people will always tell you that you not gonna make it especially people around you. Sometimes your family members could make it because of the circumstances that you in. Circumstances must not determine who you are you just have to work and believe even if you do not see light at the end of the tunnel, if you keep on working and opportunity comes, you will be ready for it,” he says.

Meanwhile, North West University Vice-Chancellor Professor Bismark Tyobeka has described Kolisi as a beacon of hope and determination.

“If we go back and look at where he was born in the township of Zwide, abject poverty, drug abuse, alcohol abuse in the township but he rose to be a two-time champion, captain of the team that won world champions. That tells you really if we use people like him as a role model for our young people we can go way way further,” Tyobeka says.
