The University of Cape Town’s SRC has temporarily called off its protest over student debt and lack of accommodation. That’s after the university council approved a joint proposal tabled by the SRC and the UCT executive on Thursday.

SRC President, Luthando Lukhele says that it allows students with debt exceeding R10 000 to register for the 2025 academic year. She says the proposal covers five categories of students with debt. Lukhele says that UCT will also cater for financially vulnerable students who are academically eligible.
“So that is the reason the strike has been temporarily paused. We still understand that there’s a huge housing issue within the University of Cape Town which needs to be dealt with. So then we decided to take a more diplomatic approach with housing because if we continue with the strike, housing workers can’t enter into the University of Cape Town, and therefore we can’t necessarily assist each other,” says Lukhele.
