Hundreds of mourners have converged at Ga-Sekororo outside Tzaneen in Limpopo, where the funeral service for the deceased, Rifleman Calvin Louis Moagi, is under way.
The mood at the proceedings is somber.
Rifleman Moagi is one of the 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during a peacekeeping mission.
Moagi family spokesperson, Monageng Moagi, says they are relieved that the remains of their loved one have been finally brought back so they can give him a decent funeral.
“We feel so relieved that his remains have finally been brought back. So, we will be able to show all the younger ones, even his daughter when she grows up, that their dad was a hero from the community. We did not expect this kind of support from everybody from all corners of South Africa.”
Moagi’s partner broke down in tears as his mortal remains were brought into the tent.
