A police officer has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment following a guilty verdict on a charge of attempted murder by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo.

Five years ago, convicted Constable Tiyani Ndlovu had been stationed at Welkom police station in the Free State when he opened fire at mourners during a funeral in Mavele village, N’wamita.

Ndlovu opened fire after mourners complained about loud music which the officer was playing from his vehicle.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate(IPID) confirmed Ndlovu drove past a homestead that was preparing for a funeral while playing loud music.

The mourners cautioned him against playing loud music in his car which he retaliated to by producing a firearm and shooting randomly.

A mourner was left wounded after being shot in his ear and shoulder.

Ndlovu has also been declared unfit to possess a firearm.
