A total of 55 state vehicles have been stolen or hijacked in the Eastern Cape last year.

Eastern Cape Transport Department Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, says 48 vehicles were hijacked and seven were stolen.

Binqose says they only managed to recover 26 vehicles while 29 vehicles remain unaccounted for.

He says the majority of incidents occurred in Mthatha, Libode and Ngcobo.

Binqose says they condemn these criminal acts as they threaten to hamper service delivery.

“We have noted with the greatest of dismay this phenomenon of hijacking state vehicles when they are out rendering services to our people. MEC Xolile Nqatha has described this as not only an attack on the state but also as an attack on civilians. A sabotage by a few individuals who are prepared to stand in the way of service delivery for their selfish gains and the state is not going to take this lying down, it is going all out to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to book.”
